Sir John Steel (1804-1891) studied art in Edinburgh and Rome, making his name as a sculptor in 1832 with Alexander and Bucephalus. His work can mainly be found in Edinburgh, and includes statues of Wellington, Sir Walter Scott (in the Scott Monument), Professor Wilson, Dr. Chalmers and Allan Ramsay. The splendid figure of Queen Victoria over the Royal Institution gained him the appointment (1844) of Sculptor to Her Majesty in Scotland and in 1876 he was knighted by Queen Victoria in recognition of his fine equestrian statue of Prince Albert.
