Richardson's combination of technical skill and the truly contemporary nature of his work led him to win the British Council Award in 1989 and the BP Portrait Award in 1990. His fascination with contemporary culture is clearly evident in the affection he demonstrates for his superficially thuggish subjects, with each painting revealing a personal identity and narrative for the characters portrayed.
