Lot Essay

Bortnyik studied under Rippl-Rónai in Budapest where he channelled his revolutionary ideas into linocuts and poster printing. After the fall of the Hungarian Soviet Republic the artist was forced to emigrate, and in 1922 settled in Weimar. Although not a member of the Bauhaus, he was greatly influenced by its principles and methods. His work is characterised by the co-existence of plain constructions, expressionism and cubism.
