Lot Essay

Adriaan Lubbers was one of the first European artists who held an interest in New York as an inspiration for his art. His background as an engineer stimulated him in his fascination with the overwhelming architecture of this metropole. Lubbers made his first trip to New York in 1916, followed by a second one in 1926. It has been suggested that the present lot depicts the ocean liner dock on the west side of the Hudson River.
