Note:
Mirthful Three at Tiger Creek has been a popular artistic theme since the Song and Yuan dynasties. It is taken from the story of a Buddhist monk Hui Yuan of the Eastern Jin dynasty. In the painting, beneath two large lush trees, Tao Yuanming, Hui Yuan and Lu Xiujing are engaged in high conversation; beside them is the Tiger Creek bridge, with the bridge railings visible in one corner. The entire painting was created in one episode with a wet brush; the free flowing ink created a contrast between light and dark and formed a humorous intrigue.
Hui Yuan was the founder of the Lotus Sect of Chinese Buddhism. He was a monk at East Wood Temple on Lu Shan Mountain (today's Jiujiang in Jiangxi province) and was famed for his rigorous discipline and strict compliance to rules. Master Hui Yuan resided at Lu Shan Mountain for more than 30 years; never did his shadow depart from the mountains not did he set foot in the secular world. Whenever visitors came to seek advice, the Tiger Creek formed the boundary where the monk would bid his guest farewell after their meeting. If Hui Yuan trespassed, his pet tiger would immediately roar a warning. According to the Lu Shan Chronicle, one day Tao Yuanming stayed at the temple, along with Lu Xiujing of Southern Mountain, who was also an accomplished savant. As they prepared to leave, Hui Yuan accompanied them out of the temple. Chatting along the way, they passed the Tiger Creek boundary unawares. Upon hearing the tiger's roar, the three suddenly came to their senses and burst out in laughter, joyfully parting ways. By passing the creek and breaking the rules, they realized the meaninglessness of their obsession with rules. This scroll Mirthful Three at Tiger Creek illustrates the harmonization of Confucian, Daoist and Buddhist ideals and the unity of the traditions.
