Lot Essay

In 1902 Fergusson moved to his first studio in Picardy Place, at the top of Leith Walk in Edinburgh. When based in Scotland and not travelling, Fergusson painted his friends, family and local surroundings. At the Piano is likely to be a painting of one of his sisters, Christina or Elizabeth Fergusson, and there is another work called Artist's Sister at the Piano in the collection of The Fergusson Gallery, Perth.
