Lot Essay

This unusual view of the bay of Saint-Tropez is taken from the Romanesque chapel of Saint Anne, which was built in the seventeenth century in the shade of the great ancient trees which grow on the volcanic peaks in the region. This watercolour is related to a unique oil of the same view and year (Cachin no. 426, Private Collection).
