Lot Essay

This drawing is part of the series of oils and drawings titled Dancer under a Starry Sky (Spies nos. 2904-2923), which Max Ernst executed in Sedona, Arizona, where he was living with his wife Dorothea Tanning in the 1950s. This series reflects Ernst's fascination with the Arizona desert landscape and the Native Americans, whose dances may be the direct inspiration for these dancing figures.
