Lot Essay

This is the earliest of Agasse's three treatments of this composition, each with significant variations. The largest, measuring 28 x 36½ in., and included in the 1989 Agasse exhibition as no. 65, reverses the direction of the string of carthorses, and shows a more wooded scene with a fence beyond the road. We are grateful to Renée Loche for her thoughts on this picture.
