Décédé prématurément, Andries Both fut l'un des premiers Bamboches, ces peintres qui travaillèrent à Rome sous l'impulsion de Pieter van Laer. Il y arriva en 1634, année où -si notre lecture de la date est bonne- a été peint le Concert de gueux. Mais plutôt que caractéristique du séjour italien, ce tableau évoque ceux exécutés aux Pays-Bas juste avant le départ de l'artiste, tels que Les joueurs de cartes, daté 1634 (Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum).
