oil on canvas
39 1/8 x 25 in. (99.4 x 63.5 cm.)
Painted in 1961
Provenance
I bought the painting from New Delhi's Kunika Chemould Gallery in 1967. Husain had painted some half a dozen nudes in the early 1960s, the others all reclining I believe. This one was different. The orientation of the artist's Urdu signature, the way dimensions were listed on the back, and the composition suggested that the figure was standing. Nevertheless, when I had an opportunity to talk with Husain about the painting, he surprised me by choosing to view the piece horizontally. It has been hung both his preferred way and mine over time.
