The present plates are from a service of some 368 pieces made by Sèvres for Louis-René-Edouard, Prince (later Cardinal Prince) de Rohan and itemized in the sales records for 7 September 1772 at a total cost of 20,772 livres. See Geoffrey de Bellaigue, French Porcelain in the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen, London, 2009, cat. no. 158, p. 622 for another plate from this service marked and incised for the same date of facture, bird painter and repareur.
