Lot Essay

Kokkino Horio ('Red Village') is in a parched area of Crete near Souda Bay. The settlement - a location for the 1964 film Zorba the Greek - has relied on garden wells collecting winter rain from its flat roofs. One is shown at the centre of this picture.

We are very grateful to Ian Collins for his assistance in cataloguing this lot and lot 6. The present work will be reproduced in the memorial monograph on John Craxton, by Ian Collins, which will be published by Lund Humphries in June 2011, ahead of a six-month exhibition at Tate Britain.
