It was a heavy sultry evening
signed with a fly (lower right), signed again, inscribed and dated 'It was a heavy sultry evening ... when we saw/'Bonny Warfe', the milk horse, dragging the watering/cart through the High St. All the children were following/it and getting very wet. 'Quick Jane' cried Aunt Charlotte/'just look at George, he's sure to fall in all that/water', but Mother had already seen him, so/had Mr Taylor (the Bank Manager) who was on/his way to call on the Aunts and Miss Carter (who/wore Pink). He knew he would find them at/Grandma's. His wife had been dead a year now/and he was beginning to feel lonely. Everyone/thought he would soon propose to Miss Carter. She/had lovely clothes and it was said, she had/Private Means, but lately he had been noticing/Aunt Frances and the year was 1906/Helen Layfield Bradley 1971' (on a label attached to the reverse)
