THE YOUTHFUL JOSEPH, as an initial I, and TWO PAINTED WHITE-VINE INITIALS, one with a bird, on four leaves and a bifolium from Lectionaries, DECORATED MANUSCRIPTS ON VELLUM
[Austria, probably Salzburg, second half of 12th century]
i) 320 x 220mm. The near-naked figure of the young Joseph drawn in brown and orange ink opens 'Ioseph cum sedecim esset annorum pascebat gregem', Genesis 37, 2-10, lessons for the third Sunday in Lent; recto blank with remains of later shelfmark CC 2.
ii) 320 x 2245mm. Initial F with a perching bird, drawn in orange ink and infilled with blue and green, opens 'Frequenter iudei deversis', St John Chrysostom's 71st Homily on Matthew (Ch.22, 34-36), lesson for the feast of St John Chrysostom; 27 lines of text on verso.
iii) 300 x 245mm. Initial A, drawn in orange ink and infilled with blue and green, opens 'Ad propinquaverunt [autem] dies David', Kings III 2, 1-14, lesson for the 7th Sunday after Pentecost; 27 lines of text on verso (extensive ink loss).
iv) 300 x 235mm. A large orange initial opens 'Ad pharisei prandium', from the Homily of St Gregory (PL.76,1243), the lesson for the feast of the Birth of the Magdalene; 26 lines of text on verso.
v) 520 x 360mm overall. A part bifolium with large initials Q and S with readings for Advent; up to 30 lines of text (irregular shape and cut into text at top).
All with the darkening, creasing, sewing holes, slits or snips that are customary on vellum recovered from wrappers and bindings. (5)
