Details
MISSAL, use of Olmütz [Olomouc]: Missale Olomucense. Edited by7 Stanislaus ThurzoVienna: Johann Winterburg, 14 March 1505.
2° (311 x 217mm). Printed in red and black. Quire y containing the Canon printed on vellum. Two full-page woodcuts (King Wenceslaus; Crucifixion), one half-page table for finding the dominical letter dated 1490, large initial T opening the Canon, small Paschal Lamb woodcut, printer's device on M8v, fine historiated and ornamental initials, lombard initials, printed music on staves; THE LARGE CUTS AND DECORATIVE INITIALS BY LUCAS CRANACH I, all but the table with contemporary hand-colouring, the Canon cut and initial T illuminated. (Lacks x2.7, repaired neat tears into text in 4 leaves, H2 defective, s3 and M5-6 lightly defective, some margins frayed, several repaired.) Contemporary blindtooled calf over wooden boards, metal center- and cornerpieces, 2 fore-edge clasps (somewhat restored, some metalwork missing). Provenance: Olmütz, present day Olomouc, Moravia, Czech Republic (various 16th- and 17th-century inscriptions and additions, including one naming Gregory Nasch, purchase inscription dated 1506).
THE ILLUSTRATIONS ARE AMONG THE EARLIEST WOODCUTS BY LUCAS CRANACH; the crucifixion cut and handsome initials had previously been used by Winterburger in his 1503 Missal for Passau. They attest to Cranach's presence in Vienna before he settled in Wittenberg in 1505. No copies of this edition, or indeed of any 15th- or 16th-century missal for Olmütz, has appeared at auction in over 35 years. The only known complete copy is at Vienna. Cf. Denkmale, 1904, ii, 2-182; Campbell-Dodgson II, p.277, no. 2; VD-16 M-5604; Weale-Bohatta 690.
