Lot Essay

The prime version of the present composition is in the Saint Louis Art Museum (see J.R. Judson and R. Ekkart, Gerrit van Honthorst, 1592-1656, Doornspijk, 1999, pp. 173-4, no. 215). Of the seven recorded replicas of this composition, only two have identified locations.
