Lot Essay

This newly discovered, unpublished painting may constitute an important addition to Guercino's early oeuvre. The handling in several of the passages, such as the Christ Child and Saint Charles, recall similar treatments in the artist's work, such as in his Miracle of Saint Charles Borromeo of circa 1613-14 (San Sebastiano, Renazzo di Cento). Moreover, as the Saint Catherine reflects the influence of Annibale Carracci, the present painting may be one of the earliest products of Guercino's Bolognese period.

We are grateful for Professor Daniele Benati for suggesting the attribution on the basis of photographs (private communication, 5 December 2010).
