A handwoven wool carpet, the square field finely knotted in orange, pink, ochre, ivory-white, black and green, by Pierre Legrain, for Jacques Doucet, circa 1924
This rug occupied pride of place in the grand salon of notable patron Jacques Doucet's celebrated Studio St James in Neuilly, the suite of rooms within which he displayed in the late twenties his extraordinary collection of modern and contemporary art. Legrain played a central role in the furnishing and installation of this treasure house - that is celebrated as a veritable hymn to all that was inventive, provocative and seductive in the art and ideas of the early 20th century.
