Gauguin composed this enigmatic image by combining two impressions from different workings of a single wood block. The thin Japanese paper, on which the artist printed the second state of the image in dark grey, is thin enough to let the first state image, printed in ochre, show through. The superimposed combination gives the image the effect of a chiaroscuro work which would usually be created by printing different blocks of color onto the same piece of paper.
