With Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming production of the present watch with in 1956 and its subsequent sale on 23 June 1958.
Reference 2540 was in production from 1954 to 1960 and was Patek Philippe's first square wristwatch fitted with an automatic movement. The model was also available with mechanical movements, calibre 12'''400, ref. 2540/1, such as the present watch, and calibre 27 SC with sweep centre seconds, ref. 2540/2.
This watch has never been offered at auction before and is believed to be one of only eight examples of a reference 2540/1 in yellow gold to appear in public to date, most likely the only one with the retailer's signature Gübelin.
