This painting was created in 1930, when Qi Baishi was 66 and just living in Beijing. Qi gives life and vitality to the flowers and insects he creates, exuding a spirit of warmth and simplicity to his viewers. Qi's choice of colours too is deliberate and playful - red for the flowers to contrast the dark leaves executed in xieyi style, the light yellow dragonfly depicted hovering just above the light wash of grey for water. The few, subtle grey strokes imitate a slight breeze over the waters, and is characteristic of Qi's proficiency in delivering the tone of his paintings succinctly.
