According to Mr. Katsuizumi's personal recollections of 15th August, 1962, this current painting was one of his first acquisitions. Having visited Qi Baishi's studio with Mr. Tanso Ito in 1925, it was with Mr. Ito's help that Mr. Katsuizumi was able to obtain two small works by Qi on Christmas Eve of the same year. In the fall of 1931 Mr. Katsuizumi befriended Mr. Isamu Noguchi, then a young student from Europe who was on a Guggenheim scholarship for Fine Arts. Mr. Katsuizumi recounts that upon seeing Cabbage and Mushrooms, 'all of a sudden his [Mr. Noguchi's] eyes sparkled. He moved forward pointing his index towards the cabbage still fixing his eyes on it and exclaimed "This is real art". This painting led to their meeting with Qi Baishi the following morning, and Mr. Noguchi studied brush painting under the artist for around 6 months.
