Lot Essay

The tentative identification of the sitter in the present portrait as Cardinal (later Prince) Maurice of Savoy (1593-1657) is based on favorable comparisons to his likeness in the group portrait, presumably by Jan Kraeck, known as Giovanni Caracca, in the Pinacoteca in Turin and in later portraits.
