Lot Essay

Juan Rexach, along with his contemporary and occasional collaborator Jaime Baço Jacomart (d. 1461), is considered the leading artist of fifteenth-century Valencia. A signed and dated retable dedicated to Saint Ursula (1468; Barcelona, Museo de Arte Catalunya) serves as the basis for identifying and dating works by this artist. Another panel depicting the Visitation by Rexach was painted for the Church of San Juan in Morella (now Morella, Santa María Mayor; see C.R. Post, A History of Spanish Painting, Cambridge, Massachusetts, VI, I, pp. 71-3, fig. 17).

Professor José Gudiol proposed the attribution to Rexach and date of c. 1465-75 for this panel (written correspondence, 22 October 1970).
