Château Latour--Vintage 1928
Pauillac, 1er cru classé. Château-bottled
Vintage note: 1928 is one of the legendary "hot" years, with a weather pattern that got sunnier and hotter as the summer went by, culminating in a heat wave in August. A bit of rain fell just at the end to finish the ripening cycle. The harvest, however, took place under good conditions beginning on 25 September. The extreme conditions produced in some cases very hard tannins. Although the wines were not a well received in their youth as the more forward '29s, over time the reputation of the '28s has grown. One salient character of the wine that is often remarked is that the heat of the year led to a mysteriously smoky taste.
"It was, and still is, the star of the vintage. Like the 1870 Lafite, so dense, powerful and bitterly tannic that it was a full half century before it was mellow enough to be enjoyed. I considered it at its peak in the 1980s: intensely deep; spicy, cinnamon, cedary bouquet; surprisingly sweet and velvety despite its tannin, masculine with great concentration and length.
