In later years, Lowry liked to depict single figures isolated in a sea of white pigment, a type represented in this collection by a painting from 1963 of two anglers hooded and booted against inclement weather facing a grey sea on a grey day. (Note the subtle modulations of white here: the enlivening touches of pink and yellow, the warmth of mixed colour and lively texture. This is anything but a dull painting).
