Published with omissions as part of Journals Kept in France & Italy, 1871. Senior had long spent the vacations from his various posts (at this stage as Drummond professor of political economy at Oxford), in travelling around Europe and the Levant, and from the late 1840s he developed the habit of keeping journals of these excursions, which he then had copied for limited circulation: the journals, which have never been published in full, are important in particular for their record of his wide-ranging conversations with the leading statesmen of the day. In addition to geographical and sociological observations of his journey through France and into the Pyrenees, the present journal records conversations on the political situation in France and elsewhere with Alexis de Tocqueville (with whom Senior had maintained a close friendship since 1833), Alphonse de Lamartine and others.
