Published with omissions in Journal Kept in France and Italy (1871). One of a series of journals by this influential economist, in which he records his tours of Europe and the Levant and his conversations with leading statesmen: the present journal includes, in addition to accounts of the art and antiquities of Naples (including Pompeii), some of which he views in company with the future prime minister W.E. Gladstone, his transcriptions of conversations on the political and social state of Naples with Carlo Troya, Carlo Filangieri and others.
