November, December, January 1855, 1856', 18 November 1855 - 30 January 1856, occasional emendations or insertions in autograph, illustrated with six contemporary photographs, 250 x 190mm, depicting the Pylon in Thebes, the Great Square in Cairo, a mosque at Girgeh, and ancient monuments at Denderah, Carnac, Edfou and Philae, also five maps or topographical views, autograph limitation note under title ('It is requested that no part of this journal be copied'), approximately 242 leaves, 4to, contemporary calf gilt (some wear).
Published posthumously as part of Conversations and Journals in Egypt and Malta, 1882. One of series of journals in which this influential economist records his tours of Europe and the Levant and his conversations with leading statesmen. Senior's visit to Egypt was in company with a group of engineers charged with carrying out a feasibility study for the future Suez Canal, and the canal project naturally looms large in Senior's interviews with Ferdinand de Lesseps, Charles, 1st Earl Canning, Said Pasha, Sir Frederick Bruce and others; the journal also records his observations of the antiquities of Egypt, and of its current social and economic condition.
