woodcut, 1912, on grey wove paper, signed in pencil, inscribed with the number III.8, however apparently an impression of the second state (of three), with the lines on the forehead and the right corner of the lips still present (Schiefler and Mosel record two impressions of the first state, three of the second and at least ten of the third, final state), probably the full sheet, a deckle edge at left, with some short paper splits within the image, some moisture damage with the ink run in places, moisture stains verso, hinged onto old card inscribed in pencil Weihnachten 1915. AN. EN.
B. 293 x 227 mm., S. 348 x 307 mm.
Provenance
Acquired directly from the artist by Hermann Münchhausen, Ratzeburg and Berlin; presumably a present for Christmas 1915 from Ada and Emil Nolde.
Then by descent to the present owners.
