Rectangular with rounded corners, the hinged cover depicting Vol'ga with His Troops, after Ivan Bilibin, the reverse enameled overall with geometric and stylized floral motifs in green, brown and pale blue, centering an applied silver monogram within a white pellet border, with a ruby cabochon push-piece, marked on lower edge

Lot Essay

Vol'ga with His Troops [Vol'ga s Druzhinoi] was an illustration to Byliny. Vol'ga (1904), the subject of which was the mythic bogatyr' Vol'ga. Ivan Bilibin (1876-1942) devoted half a year to illustrating this bylina, one of the most beautifully illustrated publications of the Silver Age.
