Lot Essay

With Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming production of the present watch, set in authentic US Dollar 20 gold coin, with Breguet hour markers in 1952 and its subsequent sale on 27 May 1953.

Reference 803 was in production from the 1940s until the early 1980s. It is part of a small series of gold coin watches, given reference numbers 800 to 809, using the US$5 (ref. 800), US$10 (ref. 801), US$20 (ref. 802 & 803), CHF100 (ref. 804), Pesos 50 (ref. 805) and others. No other coin watches were since made by Patek Philippe.

The present US$20 coin watch is fresh to the market and believed to be one of only 10 examples of a reference 803 to appear in public, however only half of them featuring the much sought after Breguet numerals instead of the better known baton numerals.

A similar coin watch with movement no. 861'011, is illustrated in Patek Philippe by Martin Huber & Alan Banbery, p. 165.
