Lot Essay

The present drawing relates to others depicting the same subject in the collections of the Yale Center for British Art, New Haven; the Courtauld Institute of Art; and a private collection in the United States. It is distinguished by the inclusion of a muscular Michelangelesque figure in the centre of the composition, a character not present in any of the other large-scale drawings.
