Lot Essay

The form of this coat is reminiscent of the A-line silhouette of the 1960s, introduced by Yves Saint Laurent in his first collection for Dior in 1958. Saint Laurent's 'trapeze line' shapes, while referencing his predecessor's 'New Look' and honoring the signature look of the house, were looser, with straighter lines and gently flaring skirts; they heralded the more up-to-date lines of the 1960s.

Daphne wore this coat frequently during her late 20s and while she appreciates it's wonderful 1960s-inspired shape, she now favours a more fitted design.
