Lot Essay

Painted in New York in 1968, this very urban and almost ghettoized portrait of Dante is a fine example of Souza's skillful use and control of spray paint and graffiti style. The metallic spray paint has a psychedelic effect and the painting references the early days of punk Souza must have encountered on the streets of New York. The background and the forground blend as one and the loose fluid lines that outline Dante's face change colors and move with rhythm and energy; a representation of life rather than after the life of Dante. Borrowing from classical portrayals of Dante, the only distinct and recognizable feature is his prominent nose.
