Lot Essay

Untitled (Family) is Smith's last recorded print and was created after the birth of his first child, Rebecca. In this final effort of printmaking Smith achieves an extremely strong yet delicate image which thoroughly illustrates his command of the medium. Smith experimented with the boundaries of lithography in this second state, after taking several pulls of the first state the stone was resensitized then rolled with fresh ink before being processed, the resulting atmospheric tone truly solidifies the composition.
