Eugene Boudin (1824-1898)
Property from the Estate of Paul Mellon Christie's is honored to present the following two paintings from the estate of Paul Mellon (1907-1999), among the greatest American collectors and charitable benefactors of the twentieth century. The son of Andrew W. Mellon, Secretary of the Treasury from 1921-1932 and founder of the National Gallery of Art, he was educated at Choate, Yale and Clare College, Cambridge. Thereafter he became one of the most generous champions of each, most notably Yale, where he created the Yale Center for British Art, which houses the bulk of his collection of British Art, considered the finest such collection outside of Great Britain. An avid collector, museum supporter and philanthropist, Mr. Mellon's far-ranging interests extended to horse racing: his Rokeby Stables produced Kentucky Derby winner Sea Hero, Arts and Letters and Fort Marcy, the latter two being American Horses of the year (for 1969 and 1970, respectively). Looking back in his 1992 memoir, "Reflections in a Silver Spoon," Mr. Mellon was typically modest: "I have been an amateur in every phase of my life; an amateur poet, an amateur scholar, an amateur horseman, an amateur farmer, an amateur connoisseur of art, an amateur publisher, and an amateur museum executive. The root of the word 'amateur' is the Latin word for love, and I can honestly say that I've thoroughly enjoyed all the roles I have played." Property from the Estate of Paul Mellon
