Lot Essay

Chen developed his unique style in lines and ink-painting-like techniques during his time in Shanghai, and this style is noticeable in the large number of drawings created 1932. These drawings with sheer colors were created when Chen was in the process of developing his own voice and concept of art concept. Referencing Western art and Chinese ink paintings, these drawings show how Chen transformed his realistic style into a more abstract and free style. Seated Nude 32.1 (Lot 329) and Lying Nude 32.1 (Lot331) were drawn in January, 1932. Chen emphasized the models' postures and created the light and dark by molding colorful contour lines. In Seated Female Nude, the feet can be recognized easily with distinct characteristics. In contrast, the feet in Lying Female Nude are simplified. Studio 32.5.22 (Lot 330) drawn in May, 1932 was features few outlines indicating the lady's body shape with no clear features of hands. The contour lines of the tail of the dress skirt are extended from the shadow, thus adds an elegance heroine. The pure and classical colors in the drawing directly deliver the painter's feelings and sensibility.
