Lot Essay

A member of the core group of Indonesian modern artists who set the path of modern art alongside political interests, Soedibio was a member of the PERSAGI group of revolutionary artists and also participated in the activities of the Young Indonesian Artists' Association (SIM). Having created works in the realist style early in his career, often with revolutionary themes, Soedibio turned to painting in a reclusive and less politicized manner after his release from Dutch military detention in 1950.

As a pioneer generation artist, Soedibio's oeuvre has yet to gain its rightful place of importance in art history, primarily due to the fact that between the years of 1950 and 1966, he painted reclusively and missed the discourse on painting and art other Indonesian artists took part in.

Wandering in the Room of Colours (Lot 345) is an exemplary work of the Indonesian surrealist artist, Soedibio, which reveals the unique character of his painting style that is highly influenced by Javanese mysticism and decoration. A layered composition of distinct colour planes and geometric forms in a visually complex but harmonious arrangement, the unmistakable form of human figures are interspersed across the top half of the painting, denoting the co-existence of human and nature, abstracted and transformed on the picture plane as a field of colours.
