César and Constantin Faucher were twin brothers, often called the 'Jumeaux de la Réole', who were known to be inseparable. Officers in the Royal army, they supported the Revolution of 1789. They were promoted 'généraux de brigade' in 1793. In 1800 Constantin was made 'sous-préfet' of La Réole, and César member of the 'Conseil général' of Gironde. They quit their administrative roles when Napoleon became emperor, but still supported him during the '100 jours'. They were arrested on the return of the Bourbons in 1815 and executed on September 1815 of that year.
Another version of this drawing is in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Orléans (M. Korchane, Entre Lumières & Romantisme. Dessins du musée des Beaux-Arts d'Orléans, exhib. cat., Orléans, 2006, no. 63).
