The Comité Magritte has confirmed the authenticity of this drawing.

The present lot was included in one of two sketchbooks which René Magritte gave to the writer Marcel Marïen on 19 December 1937 when the artist and the writer were discussing artistic problems. In a note to his text Croquer les idées, Marïen comments on the present drawing: It was at this point that he drew on thin sheets of tissue paper which protected sheets of drawing paper (Marïen 1994, p. 125, note 3).
