Lot Essay

Born in 1973, Ay Tjoe is a graduate of the Bandung Technical Institute, ITB. Her artistic career began in 1993 primarily in the medium of drypoint on paper, and in the year 2000 she started her artistic exploration on canvas. The artworks she produces are channels to express her personal and emotional views of life and of people surrounding her. Ay Tjoe's numbered paintings such as iii I (Lot 313) reflect her belief that humankind live in a certain way with numbers; for instance, in a family, children are referred to with numbers according to the order of birth as well as to denote hierarchy and responsibility. This particular piece is a charming example of her painterly art using acrylic on canvas as a medium.
