The present painting is typical of Eastlake's work during his early years in Rome in which his sitters were often depicted asleep in beautiful classical landscapes. Other examples include Lord Byron's Dream (1827; Tate Gallery), Hagar and Ishmael (1830; Royal Academy, London) and A Peasant Woman Fainting from the Bite of a Serpent (1831; Victoria & Albert Museum, London).
