Lot Essay

Another version of this composition is in the National Museum Warsaw (oil on canvas, 103 x 144.5 cm.). The former attribution to Jan van Bijlert has been rejected (see: P. Huys Janssen, Jan van Bijlert, catalogue raisonné, p. 199, no. R32, fig. 225). Huys Janssen considers both paintings to be by an artist from the Utrecht School, influenced by Jan van Bijlert (written communication, 4 June 2013).
