Lot Essay

Born in Osaka, Japan, in 1975, Kohei Nawa has gained international attention for his meticulous sculptures in acrylic and glass. PixCell is a term the artist created to describe his most sought after body of work. It combines the words 'pixel' and 'cell', which are fundamental elements in technology and nature. Kohei Nawa treats the two elements as parallel substances, eliminating the opposition of technology and nature to create a new approach for his sculpture.
In PixCell - Wild Boar # 4 (Lot 471) Nawa executes a complete transformation, with perfect use of transparent acrylic spheres to cover the animal body. This concept is similar to Jeff Koons' balloon animals in stainless steel, which similarly reveal shimmering effects under lights. The reflectiveness of the materials, whether stainless steel or acrylic media, speaks of the tastes and activities of urban people in their daily lives, making the sculpture a popular contemporary masterpiece.
Besides animal subjects, Nawa used transparent glasses to enclose everyday objects like toys, cars, musical instruments and shoes. Recently, he collaborated with international fashion brands, creating crystal like handbags. Pixcell - Trump#1 (Royal-Straight-Flush-Spade) (Lot 472) is the complete set of Royal Flush, which is the highest ranking hand in Poker, denoting a sense of victory and good fortune.
