Lot Essay

Zhou Chunya describes the colour green as "quiet, romantic and poetic, carefully hidden behind the soundless calm before an imminent outbreak." In this auction, we present his sculpture work Green Dog with Peach Blossom s, inspired by his beloved dog Hagen who had passed away. Different from the past, the brush strokes and texture of Hagen in paintings are now substituted by brightly-coloured industrial paint. As a very seasoned painter, Zhou's brushworks on a sculpture with a connotation of repeatability further accentuate the originality of his paintworks. The industrial-art sculpture is embellished with one of the artist's important creative elements - peach blossoms. Zhou imaginatively blends the recital of peach blossoms in traditional Chinese poetry and the animated vibrant colours of Western expressive techniques into his own unique artistic discourse. Gorgeous peach blossoms are blooming on the dog, showcasing a stark contrast with the vibrant green, which enhancing the liveliness of this green dog with peach blossoms on its tongue.

"The peach tree is young and elegant; brilliant are its flowers," reads in the poem Taoyao in The Book of Songs. Teeming with the pursuit of the ideals, joy of love and passion for life, the artist lyrically transfers his longing and strength of idealism - infused with colours- to a pure green dog.
