Lot Essay

"During one of my graduate reviews at CalArts, John Baldessari approached a table upon which I had arranged a series of black and white photographs. Famously tall, John bent over from the waist to get a closer look, when the contents of the pipe in his shirt pocket were released onto the surface of one of them. I stepped forward, picked up the photo, dispensed the tobacco to the floor, and repositioned the photo to its initial position. Neither John nor I said a word about what happened, then or since. "I'm not sure, but I think this has something to do with art."-Stephen Prina (Art MFA 80)
