QI BAISHI (1863-1957)
PROPERTY OF FAMILY WHOSE ANCESTRAL HOME IS XIANGTAN, HUNAN The current owner inherited these two paintings from his mother whose family's ancestral home was Xiangtan, Hunan. Also a native of Xiangtan, the young Qi Baishi served as a carpenter and lived for a time in the owner's great grandfather's Xiangtan household. From that time the artist had a strong personal relationship with the owner's family including serving as a painting teacher to one of his aunts, and Qi once carved a seal for the owner's mother (see Figure 1). The owner's parents met and were married in Chongqing during the war and the owner's father thereafter came to know Qi Baishi. While Shrimp was dedicated to the owner's father, Lotus was painted for a member of the owner's mother's family and was acquired by his mother from that family member.
