The very first model of the celebrated Daytona series was the reference 6239, and was seen in sales catalogues in Europe as of 1964. Reference 6239 was the firm's first chronograph with the tachometer scale on the bezel, whereas previous models, such as the reference 6238, had it printed on the dial. Another notable difference was that the subsidiary dials were printed in a different color than the main dial for better readability. Early models featured only the designation Cosmograph on the dial, and Daytona was added on later series to mark Rolex's sponsorship of the renowned NASCAR stock car race.
Reference 6262, along with the reference 6264, was produced from the end of the 1960's through 1972. The model was produced in stainless steel and both 14k and 18k gold, and the 6262 featured a metal bezel with engraved tachometer scale, while the 6264 featured a bezel with black plastic insert and printed tachometer scale. Around 9,000 steel versions and several dozen gold versions of the 6262 model were produced, and all featured the latest generation 727 caliber.
Among all of the dial variations produced, the "Paul Newman" is considered the rarest to be fitted on the Cosmograph Daytona. The present watch features this so-called "exotic" dial, named after the famous actor after he was photographed wearing a Rolex watch in a publicity shoot for the film Winning.
